A warm welcome awaits you!
Wellington is a small, vibrant and spectacular harbour city surrounded by steep hills covered in regenerating native forest. It is New Zealand’s capital, in both the political and cultural sense, being home to the National Library; Te Papa Tongarewa - the National Museum of New Zealand; Archives New Zealand and the New Zealand Film Archive, along with many other cultural organisations. The city was also recently named the ‘Coolest Little Capital in the World’ by Lonely Planet.

Travel Information

Several airlines with international and domestic service fly into Wellington, including Air New Zealand, Qantas, Virgin Australia, and Jet Star. Several international airlines fly direct to New Zealand via Auckland and Christchurch, or from ports in Australia. Direct flights to Wellington from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane are available. Wellington is also accessible via train and from the South Island by two ferry services (Interislander or Bluebridge) and from other domestic destinations in New Zealand.

If you are planning to hire a car or camper van in New Zealand, please note that we drive on the left here, and many roads are just two lanes. Distances, like most other measures, are in metric. Some information on New Zealand’s road rules can be found in this handy guide to driving in New Zealand.

Visitors from some countries may not require a visa to visit New Zealand; please check Immigration NZ’s website to verify if you require a visitor visa or not. This website also has many useful tips for travellers. New Zealand has very strict bio-security requirements at its borders and visitors are strongly encouraged to visit NZ Customs Service website to become familiar with the rules and regulations.
